On the Farm

Ourlando Intern Roxanne Ravago and Board Member Scott Tess visited Ourlando member Lake Meadow Naturals in Ocoee to take photos for a forthcoming print Independent Business Guide and to learn about cage free egging.

Despite being only ten minutes from Orlando, owner Dale Volkert’s property is an idyllic rural refuge.  The view across Lake Meadow is unbroken by rooftop or high rise.  Lake Meadow Naturals is a restoration of classic mixed farms.  While egg production is the backbone of the farm there is also beef and honey production and an experimental endeavor into hydroponic vegetable production.  Furthermore, Dale, in overalls and boots, fits right into the picture.

The venture into hydroponic growing suggests that although classic, Lake Meadow Naturals is not stuck in the past.  The egg business is getting modern and green by utilizing 100% recycled content egg cartons.  And bonus points, the cartons are made in neighboring Zellwood, FL!  Yesterdays newspaper carries tomorrows eggs.

Lake Meadow Farms eggs will make natural food advocates happy as they are fed an all vegetarian diet and are never treated with antibiotics or steroids of any kind.

You can enjoy eco-eggy goodness by picking up Lake Meadow Naturals eggs every Monday at the Audubon Park Community Market at Stardust Coffee every Monday from 6-9pm.
